Avoid Accidents With Our Motorcycle Safety Tips

Jun. 1 2022 How TO By GP Bikes

The thrills and adrenaline attract a lot of people to motorcycling. There’s nothing like feeling the landscape race past as you lean into turns on the open road, and cranking your throttle up to a mighty roar. However, staying safe on your bike has to be your number-one priority. Here are our top tips for safe motorcycle riding. For all your motorbike needs, visit GP Bikes in Whitby, Ontario, serving Toronto, Oshawa, and Oakville.

Inspect Your Motorcycle Before Every Ride

Catch potential issues in the safety of your driveway instead of on the highway. Check your tires, fluid levels, gas level, brakes, and lights. Once you fire her up and ride, start slow and check the brakes and the clutch. Any issues? Reach out to our service department.

Use Safety Gear

No matter the weather, no matter how short a ride, you should always gear up properly. Helmet, gloves, boots, leathers, and neon-bright top layers will keep you safer and visible.

Check the Weather

Check the weather. If you’re riding for fun, make other plans when facing wet, stormy, unpredictable weather. If you have to ride, layer up and ride with extreme caution. If it’s super hot, make sure you are prepared with water and sunscreen, and take breaks in the shade.

Drive Defensively

Always remember that as a motorcyclist, you’re at a disadvantage on the road. You’re smaller, harder to see, and can get squished like a bug. With only two wheels, you can slide out and lose control. So practice hyper-aware defensive driving at all times.

  • Stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Leave plenty of space between you and other vehicles.
  • Avoid bad terrain such as puddles, potholes and debris.
  • Stay away from semis and other large vehicles.
  • Ride in groups for better visibility.
  • Maintain your focus.

Practice

Experience is the best teacher. Practice, take courses, and ride with people who can teach you safety skills.
